Modern Art began with the Industrial Revolution in the second half of the 19th century. Many different styles of modern art appeared and then disappeared just as quickly. Modern art started with Impressionism and through the years moved through to Pop Art. Impressionism began with Edouard Manet in Paris in the 1860's. Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Pissarro and Renoir were also influential in the Impressionistic movement. The impressionist painters liked to paint outside and favored landscapes and city scenes from daily life.
The modern art style of Fauvism took the wild colors of the impressionist painters one-step further. The Fauvism artists chose to use simplified designs along with an overload of color. Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy were two of the most influential painters in the Fauvism movement.
The modern art style of Art Nouveau was popular from the 1880's to around 1910. The Art Nouveau was an international movement characterized by a highly decorative style and an attention to natural forms. Not restricted to painting or printmaking, Art Nouveau covers all forms of art including architecture, furniture, jewelry, glass and illustration.
Expressionism started in Germany and is split into two groups of painters - those before World War I and those afterwards. The expressionist painters, who worked before WWI, centered themselves in Dresden, Germany. After WWI, many expressionistic painters assembled themselves in Munich to practice their art. The post-war artists include such famous names as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
In the 1920's and 1930's the Art Deco style of modern art became popular. Art Deco is primarily a design style, which is considered an offshoot of the Art Nouveau movement. Fashion, furniture, jewelry, textiles, architecture, comme
rcial printmaking and interior decoration were all involved in the Art Deco movement. New York City's Chrysler building is an example of the Art Deco style of architecture.Cubism, made popular by Pablo Picasso, is another style of modern art that was primarily restricted to painting and sculpture, unlike the art deco movement. With roots in African tribal art, Cubism favors fragmentations and geometric forms. The same aspect of a subject may be splintered off and repeated.
Surrealism is another of the important modern art forms of the 20th century, which focuses on dreams, the unconscious mind and other psychological aspects of art. Salvador Dali, Max Ernest and Marc Chagall were all influential in this movement.
The father of Abstract Art is said to be Russian-born painter Wassily Kandinsky, who was also influential in the German Expressionism movement as well. In abstract art, line, form, shape and color are emphasized and the likeness to any real object is most often indiscernible. Abstract art is said to be an expression of the artist's inner life at the time of the painting.
Pop Art is a contraction for Popular Art and was a reaction to the Abstract Art movement. The idea of Pop Art was to bring art back into the daily lives of ordinary people. Pop Art made its way into the media and advertising and sought to tear down the barriers between fine art and commercial art. Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein were all made famous through the Pop Art movement. The Pop Art style of modern art was mainly a British and American movement and many fine examples can be found on the album covers of the 1960's.
Conceptual Art, or Concept Art as some call it, was another movement rooted in the 1960's. With Concept Art it was the idea behind the painting or sculpture that was more important that the artwork itself. Concept Art by its very nature is provocative and is meant to stimulate the mind as well as the eye.
As great as modern art is, there are many great modern art museums as well. From Amsterdam to Ireland to the Met to the in New York and Los Angeles, there are many places to view modern art no matter what country you happen to be traveling in at the moment.
